Apple has introduced a new "Repair Assistant" feature in iOS 18, allowing iPhone users to configure replacement parts after a repair. This tool works exclusively with genuine Apple components and ensures that an iPhone functions as expected when repaired with Apple parts.
For instance, if a display is replaced, the Repair Assistant can configure it to enable features like True Tone and auto-brightness. Similarly, for a battery replacement, it ensures the Battery Health reporting functions correctly. The feature can also be used to configure parts that were installed before iOS 18’s release. For example, users with a third-party battery replacement using an Apple battery can now configure it as an official Apple component.
Once iOS 18 is installed, any configurable part will appear under the "Parts and Service" section in the About menu of the Settings app. If a user has not had any repairs, this section will not be visible.
Apple notes that Repair Assistant is compatible with iPhone 12 and later models. It can be used to configure various parts, including batteries, cameras, and displays.
This feature was first announced by Apple in April, with a planned rollout in the fall. It allows users to repurpose genuine Apple parts for fully functional repairs. Additionally, Apple is extending Activation Lock to iPhone components to help prevent stolen devices from being disassembled for parts.
